Because the 22-year-old assistant cheerleading coach was a “person
in a position of authority,” she found herself facing felony sex
charges after performing oral sex on a 17-year-old high school student
in her car.
But prosecutors were willing to strike a deal.
The young woman won’t have to register as a sex offender, as David
Knowles reports for the New York Daily News, though she did plead guilty
to conducting performance harmful to minors, a felony in Indiana.
She’ll be on probation for a year and a half and will do 25 hours
of community service. But if all goes smoothly, the incident will be a
“blip on the radar” for her, as her defense attorney said.
After all, she’s only 22.
Had the situation been any different – Indiana law says that state
employees cannot have sex with anyone under 18 if the employee oversees
the minor, even though the age of consent in that state is 16 –
she may not have faced charges at all.
